Resist War: Global Days of Action in Maine (Bangor)
April 15, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Now is the time we contemplate paying our war taxes. Sometime before April 18th, we need to decide whether we will support US war making abroad and here against our own citizens. To quote Maine’s US Representative Pingree, she “is disappointed that the final version of the FY17 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) included a provision that allows for indefinite detention of United States citizens, and permits the military to imprison Americans without a trial…” The Maine War Tax (WTR) Resistance Resource Center staunchly agrees with Representative Pingree and advocates taxpayers withhold their support for seeding destruction across the planet and re-direct resisted taxes to the good work that is being cut from our country’s budget.
Two years ago 5-6 war tax resistance actions took place. Last year 11 actions took place. This year a total of 15 actions, called Resist War: Global Days of Action in Maine, are taking place across the state to educate citizens about the connection between their taxes and the US military-industrial complex, the largest polluter known to the US (not to mention the death and injuries that result from their actions).
The Maine WTR Resource Center encourages taxpayers to educate themselves by talking with war tax counselors to understand fully the investment they are making when they pay their taxes. This year is different from the past because, through the US budget process, proposals are to shift funding from the social safety net to increase spending on the military. Vote with your dollars to say, “No taxation without representation” and no taxation to fuel violence and climate change. Divest from the Pentagon.
