Responding to White Hate in Maine (Portland)

February 22, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

At this meeting we will be asking white folks to examine our own white identities and explore how we are complicit in white supremacy. We will also be discussing how white people can be effective allies in responding to recent examples of overt white hate and violence in Maine.

We can provide childcare if needed (leave us a comment or email us at greaterportlandsurj@gmail.com).

If you’re new to SURJ, welcome! We’re glad you’re coming! You can read more about the mission and values of SURJ here:
The core team of Greater Portland SURJ creates the framework of our meetings to be a learning space for white folks to do our homework, to unpack the racism we’ve been socialized to through our lives and to work towards being better anti-racists and accomplices to people of color in dismantling white supremacy so we can more effectively and less harmfully show up however People Of Color-led organizations ask us to.
Everyone is welcome at our meetings and as this can be messy, imperfect work, it is a process and we’re consistently trying to do better. We understand that POC often are in situations (whether or not they’d like to be), of educating white folks on these matters and acknowledge that dealing with that sort of emotional labor can be exhausting. This is a big part of why our chapter of SURJ exists, for white folks to do the work without placing the burden on POC.
We hope that any People of Color who choose to come to meetings feel welcome and emphasize there is no obligation to educate white folks or engage in the emotional labor unless you would like to.
