Slut Walk (Portland)

April 23, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

The USM Huskies for Reproductive Health and the Queer Straight Alliance are partnering to host a Slut Walk in Portland, ME. Let’s show the Trump administration who’s boss

SlutWalk is a transnational movement of protest marches calling for an end to rape culture. Specifically, participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a person’s appearance. We will also be making an effort to represent the issue of black / queer / trans sexual violence more than other walks have in the past. This is an intersectional event.

We will meet in Monument Sq. And walk a mile or so throughout Downtown Portland.

**WE WILL BE COLLECTING DONATIONS OF PERIOD PRODUCTS (pads, tampons, etc.) FOR LOCAL HOMELESS SHELTERS AND CASH DONATIONS FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT SUPPORT SERVICES (SARSSM, Family Crisis Center)**

More details to come as we plan, save the date and hope to see you there!

A brief history for those who have concerns about the name:

“On April 3, 2011, approximately 3,000 women (and men) marched the streets of Toronto in what they dubbed a SlutWalk. Angered by the comments of a Toronto police officer — who had ill-advisedly said that women shouldn’t “dress like sluts” if they wanted to avoid being assaulted — marchers rallied to protest blaming rape victims for their own assaults. To date, more than 50 satellite walks have taken place in major cities around the world, including Boston, London, New Delhi and Sydney. Dozens more are being planned and the original organizers have said they plan on making SlutWalk an annual event.”
