Tell Me the Truth!

February 7 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Free

Many of us are probably familiar with the term “woke,” which has come to mean a certain level of awareness about social and racial justice.  For Debby Irving, author of the book “Waking Up White,” it means, after a lifetime of ignorance and confusion about race and racism in this country, at last waking up to her identity and privilege as a white person.  Her awakening didn’t just happen overnight; she had to be willing to open herself up to hearing truths from people of color that were often challenging and painful, and to learn how to engage in cross-racial conversations.

We have the unique opportunity to witness such a conversation.  Shay Stewart-Bouley, known to many of us as the blogger “Black Girl in Maine” will join Debby Irving to talk about how they became friends and the insights they have gained into the reality of cross-racial connections and the mutual growth that comes from telling difficult truths.

Co-sponsored by Peace & Justice Center, U Maine Rising Tide Center, Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, Political Science Department, Division of Lifelong Learning, Office of Student Multicultural Life, and College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
